I always enjoy volunteering with globalteer at Antorchas de Vida in Medellin. The atmosphere in the home is lively and the children are very friendly. Usually the kids go to school for half a day then, the rest of the time, they do chores, play games and take English lessons from volunteers.
The classroom has plenty of school supplies and volunteers can plan activities using the books that are already available. But not every day is devoted to classes. I've gone on three field trips with the kids, including one to a local museum and one to a Comfama water park outside of town.
When the foundation stages a fiesta, the neighborhood kids all drop by and it's like an indoor block party. The project coordinator, Ashlee, keeps in contact with the volunteers and has lots of good advice about getting around town. I feel quite safe in Colombia. Medellin is a beautiful city. I also volunteered with globalteer in Cusco, Peru and had a great trip.
