I always enjoy volunteering with globalteer at Antorchas de Vida in Medellin. The atmosphere in the home is lively and the children are very friendly. Usually the kids go to school for half a day then, the rest of the time, they do chores, play games and take English lessons from volunteers.
The classroom has plenty of school supplies and volunteers can plan activities using the books that are already available. But not every day is devoted to classes. I've gone on three field trips with the kids, including one to a local museum and one to a Comfama water park outside of town.
When the foundation stages a fiesta, the neighborhood kids all drop by and it's like an indoor block party. The project coordinator, Ashlee, keeps in contact with the volunteers and has lots of good advice about getting around town. I feel quite safe in Colombia. Medellin is a beautiful city. I also volunteered with globalteer in Cusco, Peru and had a great trip.

Looking for a volunteer position in Medellin but don´t want to pay for it?
I just spent 3 months volunteering at Poder Joven, a Colombian non-profit organization which offers a comprehensive social/educative program to children from underprivileged communities in the city of Medellin. As a volunteer I spent my time teaching English and assisting with daily activities in the two youth centres. I would highly recommend this opportunity to anyone interested in pursuing a future in teaching, social work, international development or otherwise.
If you are interested in contributing to the work of this organization in improving the lives of children marginalized and displaced by la violencia, contact Poder Joven directly!

Thank you very much for your very thoughtful and considered comment. I approach the journey in very much the same way as you've described yours.
